Tips for Choosing Outfits for Your Family Photos
One thing that has always helped me when choosing outfits for my own family photos is to start with one outfit. Find the perfect look for one person—often it’s easiest to start with mom's outfit. From there, build around it without being too “matchy-matchy.” A good rule of thumb is to choose a couple of complementary colors rather than everyone wearing the same color. Avoid logos, graphic tees, and bright colors. Earthy tones always photograph beautifully. I also recommend mixing in a pattern with some solid pieces to add visual interest.
For heavier clients, layers are a great way to break up areas that might feel less flattering. As for ball caps—they’re totally up to you! But if you can get your partner or kiddos to leave them off for a bit, the photos will have a cleaner, more polished look.
A few “no-nos” to keep in mind:
- Tight clothing
- Super short skirts
- Sunglasses on the head
- Cell phones in pockets
- Hair ties on wrists
Comfort is key. Make sure everyone can move and sit comfortably, which will allow for a wider variety of posing options during the session.
Lastly, for inspiration, I always suggest looking at Pinterest. Searching “family outfit ideas for photoshoots” will bring up tons of color and style combinations that can help you visualize and start building your family’s wardrobe. It’s a fun and easy way to get ideas!
